Effects of Estrogen and Progestogen on the Cardiovascular and Endocrine Systems of Turkeys, 1973
Study Abstract
Immature male and female turkeys were treated with diethylstilbestrol (DES), DES and Provera (P), or P and mestranol (M). More male turkeys died of aortic ruptures than females, and mortality only occurred in poults treated with DES alone or those treated with DES and P. Among the plasma constituents altered as a result of these 2 treatments, only triglyceride was significantly elevated in males as compared to females. There was hypothyroidism in both sexes treated with DES, P and DES, or P and M. There were numerous spermatozoa in the seminiferous tubules of the testes of immature males treated with P and M, but the histologic appearance of ovaries of females in all treatment groups was similar.
